Senior Vice President OMV Middle East & Africa Hub
Erwin Kroell, Austrian national, obtained a MSc Degree in Petroleum Engineering at the Leoben Mining University (AT). He is a petroleum industry manager with extensive international experience and started his career as a Petroleum Engineer with OMV in 1991; gaining experience in drilling, production technology, reservoir engineering, commercial and new business development in Austria before going international in the UK North Sea, Pakistan and Libya. From 1997-2003 Erwin worked as a Production/Operations Manager, Asset Manager in Libya. In 2003 he joined Wintershall where he worked as a Technical Director for Drilling & Reservoir Development for a Russian/German Joint Venture in Siberia/Russia before taking on a General Manager role for Wintershall in Qatar. In 2011 Erwin Kroell re-joined OMV and took over the role of the Senior Vice President for the Middle East & Caspian Region. Since January 2016 he is Senior Vice President for OMV’s Middle East & Africa Region.
Senior Vice President Downstream Middle East & Asia
Since 2017, Dr. Alois Virag is OMV’s Senior Vice President Downstream Middle East and Asia.
Dr. Virag served OMV in several key senior management functions. Carrying responsibility for OMV’s refineries, Dr. Virag decisively shaped the creation of a more integrated and standardized business model through efficiency and yield optimization and established a top quartile safety record. He was also a key architect in the design and implementation of OMV’s petrochemicals expansion strategy, middle distillate flexibility and increased residue upgrade.
Prior to assuming his new role, Dr. Virag led the group wide transformation program, strengthening OMV’s overall competitiveness, including the start of a cross-divisional operations excellence program and an overhaul of OMV’s procurement and IT.
Dr. Virag obtained his PHD from Vienna Technical University, followed by a postdoctoral position at Washington University Saint Louis.
General Manager OMV Abu Dhabi
Simon Lange, British national, completed his studies at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, obtaining a BSc (Hons) Degree in Geology in 1998. He is an upstream industry manager with extensive international experience, starting his career in 1997 in Aberdeen, Simon worked for Shell International and later Cairn India in The Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, India, Ireland, UK Atlantic Margin and UK North Sea. Simon Lange joined OMV in 2008 working in technical and management roles in Romania, Abu Dhabi and New Zealand. He returned to OMV Abu Dhabi as General Manager in 2019.
